André Cailloux Center

Where New Orleans History Comes Alive

Bring your students to the André Cailloux Center for Performing Arts and Cultural Justice, located on historic Bayou Road—the oldest road in New Orleans. In just one hour, students will experience history through place, performance, and dialogue in a way textbooks can't capture.

We've Got a Story to Tell!

A Guided Tour & Immersive Theater Experience

What Students Will Experience:

  • Welcome & Historical Grounding – An introduction to Bayou Road's significance as a cultural and historical corridor

  • Guided Tour – Led by our Tour Conductor through our historic space

  • Immersive Theater Performance (30 minutes) – Captain André Cailloux comes to life, inviting students to listen closely, imagine boldly, and connect the past to the present

  • Student Q&A – Time for questions, reflection, and deeper engagement

Students will leave with a richer understanding of New Orleans history, the contributions of free people of color, and the power of storytelling to preserve and honor legacies.

Who Was Captain André Cailloux?

Captain André Cailloux was a New Orleans hero—a Civil War leader whose death sparked one of the largest public funerals in the city's history. The André Cailloux Center is one of the rare cultural institutions named in his honor, keeping his legacy alive through arts, culture, and community.

Students will also learn about his wife, Louise Félicie Coulon Cailloux, an educator and organizer who ensured his story endured. She served as principal at the Institute Catholique (Couvent School) and played a pivotal role in honoring his memory.
